Do Client Characteristics Really Drive the Big N Effect?

چکیده
A large literature concludes that Big N auditors provide higher audit quality than non-Big N auditors. An unresolved question, however, is whether self-selection drives this “Big N effect.” Most recently, a high profile study concludes that Propensity Score Matching (PSM) on client characteristics causes the Big N effect to disappear. We conjecture that this finding may be affected by PSM’s inherent sensitivity to its design choices. To investigate, we perform PSM tests of Big N audit quality using several commonly used audit quality measures, each employing 3,000 random combinations of three basic PSM design choices. We find that the results are sensitive to the design choices, with the majority of the models finding a Big N effect. We also find a Big N effect using an alternative matching procedure. Overall, our findings suggest that it is premature to conclude that client characteristics drive the Big N effect. Do Client Characteristics Really Drive Big N Quality Differentiation?
While the literature generally concludes that Big N auditors provide higher audit quality than nonBig N auditors, an unresolved question is whether this Big N effect is driven by self-selection. In particular, a recent high profile study suggests that Propensity Score Matching (PSM) on a set of commonly examined client characteristics causes Big N quality differentiation to disappear (Lawrence,...
متن کاملClient-specific litigation risk and audit quality differentiation
Purpose – The purpose of this study is to examine whether client-specific litigation risk affects the audit quality differentiation between Big N and non-Big N auditors. Specifically, we examine whether higher quality audits of Big N auditors relative to nonBig auditors is more pronounced for clients with high litigation risk than for clients with low litigation risk. Design/methodology/approac...
متن کاملAn Investigation of the Effect of Client Characteristics on Auditor Advocacy Attitude in Judgment and Decision-Making Processes
Over recent years, researchers have focused on factors shaping auditor advocacy attitude. The literature review shows that auditors’ attitudes towards clients are among factors affecting judgment and decision-making processes. The main objective of the present study was to investigate the effect of client importance and image on auditor advocacy attitude in judgment and decision-making processe...
متن کاملInvestigation of SLIM Dynamic Models Based on Vector Control for Railway Applications
Although, Single-Sided Linear Induction Motor (SLIM) utilization has increased in railway applications due to their numerous advantages in comparison to Rotational Induction Motors (RIM), there are some sophistication in their mathematical models and electrical drive. This paper focuses on the problems of SLIM modeling, with assuming end-effect on the basis of Field Oriented Control (FOC) as a ...
متن کاملDetecting Bot Networks Based On HTTP And TLS Traffic Analysis
Abstract— Bot networks are a serious threat to cyber security, whose destructive behavior affects network performance directly. Detecting of infected HTTP communications is a big challenge because infected HTTP connections are clearly merged with other types of HTTP traffic. Cybercriminals prefer to use the web as a communication environment to launch application layer attacks and secretly enga...
